SmartData, intelligent data management, vineyard and wine

SmartData in brief...

Starting from a highly competitive economic context, such as the Tuscan wine industry, our project aims to improve the sector, in various strictly interconnected areas, increasing the competitiveness of companies and contributing to the transfer of knowledge and the introduction of innovation. The coordination of the project is by the Agrotechnical and Agrotechnical College graduates of Arezzo, Grosseto, Perugia, Siena, Terni

Project scheme:

Creation of added value for agricultural products and adoption of new methods of processing and marketing

Duration of the Strategic Plan
32 months – Jan. 2020/Jul. 2022

Measures activated
16.2-1.2-1.3 of the Tuscany Region PSR

Total cost
336.000 euros

Contribution requested
302.400 euros

Description of the problem/opportunity:
Farms, especially wineries, who want to be competitive in a global market must necessarily undergo a process of digital transformation, capable of offering innovations that allow for an increase in added value.

To achieve this, it is possible to use existing methodologies. Thanks to data analysis and the application of IoT models, it is possible to trace the entire supply chain from the grape harvest to the table. In this way it is possible to enhance the production, increasing the level of food safety towards the consumer, who is willing to recognize a greater value to the product.

Brief description of the solution identified:
Innovation consists in the adaptation of existing processes and technologies aimed at improving the quality of production through the creation of a cloud platform that offers companies a system, based on the use of precision agriculture and DSS with tools and information to control both the production techniques and the innovation introduced in the cellar, which consists in the creation of a prototype, which can also be used as a decision support, with small size NIR technology, easy to use, for the continuous measurement of polyphenols in wine.

In this way the data collected are visually represented on a website by some indicators that will immediately indicate compliance with all the relevant legislation, flanked by further graphic detectors on the percentage of reduction of energy inputs compared to traditional techniques, guaranteeing complete traceability. This entire process will be made available to consumers and also to public / private entities carrying out control activities, through a QRcode present inside the label

Description of the activities and executing party

  1. Animation of the partnership and coordination of the GO – Agrotechnical College
  2. Preparation of a collaboration agreement and internal regulations of the GO – Agrotechnical College
  3. Introduction of innovation in the companies of the partnership – Agricultural partner enterprises
  4. Realization of a minisensor with NIR technology for the continuous analysis of polyphenols in winemaking – DIBAF Università della Tuscia
  5. Development of an Analytical Information System and Web GIS for Decision Support (DSS), Quality Management and web dissemination of the results of the data chain – C.R.P.V. Plant Production Research Center
  6. Communication and dissemination plan of the project results - Fondagri
  7. Organization of company visits - Fondagri

At the end of the implementation of the strategic plan, it is planned to make available to medium-high range wine companies, a system of immediate utility and operation, valid also in the long term, which allows them to guarantee the most complete traceability of agronomic operations carried out, and to let it known to the consumer.

Companies will be able to obtain an estimated increase in the commercial value of their production in the order of 5-10%, without forgetting the positive effects on the territory and society deriving from a lower environmental impact, the reduction of risks to workers' health thanks to the efficiency and reduction of treatments, reduction of water and energy resources consumption, food safety and also the improvement of the general perception of the relationship between agriculture and society.

  • Public presentations: conferences, seminars and information initiatives with the presence of one or more external speakers on specific topics.
  • Thematic meetings: information initiative of a technical-operational nature, with the presence of one or more technical experts.
  • Production of information material: paper, electronic and on the web. There will be publications and video and audio recordings, folding brochures, newsletters, IT applications (blogs, forums, chats, media sharing platforms, social networks, etc.), specific sections of institutional sites.
  • Website: related to the GO and the illustration of its Plan.
  • Demonstration activity: to be carried out by organizing demonstration fields directly within the project partner farms, with the aim of making farmers, technicians and all stakeholders outside the partnership aware of the results in the field of the activity currently carried out, highlighting advantages and potential in terms of yields, costs and quality of production.
